This year saw 11 Perm enterprises and organizations support Earth Hour, an environmental event held worldwide.

Perm has taken part in Earth Hour 2016, with the external lightning of 11 buildings being turned off to support this worldwide environmental movement.

Perm City Administration, Perm Department of the Russian Ministry of Interior, Perm brunch of the open joint-stock company T Plus (TGK-9), Perm National Research Polytechnic University, Perm Research, Development and Instrument Manufacturing Company, Lukoil-Perm, Perm local gas distribution company “Gazprom transgaz Tchaikovsky” and other business and organizations turned off the external lightning.

Perm Engine Plant joined the movement by turning off the lightning of the “MiG on Takeoff” monument while Sberbank of Russia turned off the non-essential lightning on its two central Perm offices. Gazprom Mezhregiongaz Perm turned off the external lightning of its main building for two days.

Lev Tretyakov, Deputy Head of City Department for Management of the Environment and Natural Resources, was quoted as saying:

–      Any human activity affects the environment, and the problem of natural resources depletion should be dealt with on different levels. Each year sees more and more Perm enterprises and organizations joining Earth Hour movement. Any city resident can contribute to the protection of the environment in our city, country or the whole planet by practicing an environmentally friendly living.

To protect the environment we should shop more for locally-produced goods with little or no packaging, use energy-efficient bulbs and do not leave electric appliances in the stand-by mode. Walking or using public transportation, domestic waste sorting, using non-disposable dishware, bottles and shopping bags also contribute to the protection of the environment. We should remember to properly dispose of batteries and mercury-containing bulbs as well as to use water efficiently and not to buy more than we need.

Earth Hour is a worldwide movement organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) to encourage individuals, communities, households and businesses to use natural resources more efficiently.
